National Physiotherapy Month in Canada

Canada’s physiotherapy landscape is more than just clinic visits and exercise plans—it is a vital part of the healthcare system with a rich history involving a broad range of roles. Whether you’re recovering from an injury or just looking to stay mobile, here are 10 interesting facts about physiotherapy in Canada.

1. It Was Forged in the Fires of War

Modern physiotherapy in Canada owes its start to the world wars. After World War I, the profession was formalized to rehabilitate and reintegrate injured soldiers and amputees into civilian life. Pioneers like Enid Gordon Graham were instrumental in turning wartime massage and "remedial gymnastics" into a high-standard medical profession.

2. You Don’t Need a Referral

One of the biggest myths is that you need a doctor’s note to book an appointment. In every Canadian province, physiotherapists are primary care providers, meaning you can walk right into a clinic and start treatment immediately.

Note: While the law allows direct access, some private insurance plans may still require a doctor's referral for reimbursement.

3. All New Physios Hold a Master’s Degree

The education requirements are rigorous. Since 2012, every entry-to-practice physiotherapy program in Canada has been a Master’s level university degree. Before they can practice, graduates must also pass the national Physiotherapy Competency Examination (PCE) to ensure they meet strict safety and clinical standards.

4. It’s a Growing Workforce

As of 2026, approximately 32,307 people are employed as physical therapists in Canada. The industry is growing fast—up 3.6% annually over the last five years—to meet the demands of an aging population.

5. It Can Drastically Reduce the Need for Surgery

Physiotherapy isn’t just for after surgery; it often prevents it entirely. For example, early intervention for conditions like knee osteoarthritis can reduce the need for surgery by up to 60%.

6. Many Specialties May Surprise You

Physiotherapists do much more than treat "bad backs." In Canada, they specialize in diverse areas, including:

  • Vestibular Rehab: Treating inner ear conditions like vertigo.

  • Pelvic Health: Provide pre/postnatal care and manage issues such as incontinence.

  • Cardiorespiratory: Helping patients with cystic fibrosis or those recovering from cardiac events.

  • Concussion Management: Assisting with recovery from brain injuries.

  • Cancer Rehab: Supporting patients from diagnosis through recovery.

7. It’s Not Just for Humans

While most Canadian physiotherapists focus on human health, the field also extends to animal rehabilitation. However, the profession is strictly regulated; in some provinces, a "human" physiotherapist cannot use their protected title while treating animals, as that often falls under the Veterinary Profession Act.

8. It Plays a Massive Role in the Economy

Illness and injury cost the Canadian economy about $236 billion every year. Physiotherapy is already estimated to save the system hundreds of millions annually by reducing the burden of chronic conditions like osteoarthritis and back pain.

9. Mental Health is Part of the Package

While it’s a "physical" therapy, it has profound impacts on mental well-being. Research shows that physio-guided movement and exercise improve mood, help manage stress, and release "feel-good" chemicals in the brain.

10. May is National Physiotherapy Month

Every year in May, Canada celebrates National Physiotherapy Month to recognize the profession's role in helping Canadians "move" their communities. It’s a time to highlight how physiotherapy can keep Canadians active and independent throughout the lifespan.
