Martha Nihls BScPT
Martha Nihls recently moved to the Comox Valley and joined the team at Comox Physiotherapy in February 2011.
She brings expertise in orthopaedic manual therapy, spinal manipulation, posture and body mechanics, post-ostomy education and muscle rehabilitation and pelvic floor therapy, treating men and women with urinary incontinence and pelvic pain syndromes.
Martha began her career in 1973, graduating from the University of Western Ontario with a BScPT degree. She worked in an acute care hospital in Toronto for one year. An opportunity to work in spinal research with a world-renowned manual physiotherapist resulted in a move to Vancouver in 1974.
In 1975, Martha passed the International Federation of Orthopaedic Manipulative Therapists mobilization level exam in the Canary Islands. She continued studying, working in private practice, and teaching post-graduate orthopaedic courses across Western and Central Canada from 1975-1978.
In 1978, she passed the Canadian Orthopaedic Manipulative Therapist exam. Martha was the Senior Physiotherapist of the Outpatient Department at Saint Paul’s Hospital from 1978-1983, after which she was an associate physiotherapist in various private physiotherapy clinics in the lower mainland.
She was the chief examiner for the Association of Physiotherapists and Massage Practitioners of BC (now known as College of Physical Therapists of BC) from 1989-1994.
In 2000, Martha achieved a Diploma of Advanced Manual and Manipulative Physiotherapy. Since the year 2000, Martha’s professional career has also encompassed pelvic floor therapy. Post-graduate studies have included treating urinary incontinence in women and men, pelvic floor muscle
re-education and behavior techniques and treating pelvic pain syndromes such as vestibulitis, coccyx pain and painful intercourse.
